Robert Zandvliet, born in 1970, is one of the most renown Dutch painters of his generation.
His images oscillate between tangible aspects of the individual constituents of painting and their respective meaning and expression, which, for example, may be realized by the material trace of a brush stroke and the evocative potential of colour. Colour as a central condition of painting and the reflection on a diversity of possible pictorial effects attained by it are focal points of the artist's attention: from the fluid movement of the brush and the rhythm of its strokes to the play and tension between the transparency and opacity of colour.
In doing so his abstract works, painted in the traditional medium of egg tempera, always retain a reference to figuration and the representative potential of painting. This happens in a continual dialogue with exemplary types of pictorial composition that were developed throughout the history of painting in different traditional genres, such as landscape, still life, and portrait. These are used by the artist as a kind of compositional extract for his abstract work.
Zandvliet, for example, intentionally placed a whole series of paintings within the rich tradition of painting in order to adopt its compositional principles and painting strategies for our present times. This group of paintings was recently exhibited in the much acclaimed solo show "I owe you the truth in painting" in the Gemeentemuseum The Hague. The catalogue which accompanied the exhibition is available at our gallery.
Since 1995 his works were shown in museums in Europe and the USA and are located among others in the following collections:
Stedlijk Museum, Amsterdam Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam De Pont, Tilburg Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag Neues Kunstmuseum, Luzern Kunstmuseum, Bonn Muhka, Antwerpen Musee d'art Moderne et Contemporain, Strasbourg ABN Amro Kunstcollectie, Amsterdam Akzo Nobel Art Foundation, Amsterdam Rabo Art Collection, Utrecht Caldic Collectie, Wassenaar Microsoft Art Collection, Redmond, USA H+F Collection Kunstcollectie KPN, Den Haag Sarasin Bank, Luzern La Roche Company, Basel and others
